Engine mounts

After only a year or so the engine mounts on or minor are beginning to fail (the rubber is separating from the back plate) given the shocking quality of the replacement parts nowadays and the fat that the mounts were pretty crude in the first place I'm thinking of making something better, two options I have come up with so far are modifying the towers to accept escort world cup type mounts or using a mk1 MX5 mount which is similar to the minor but larger and with things like snubbers etc
Has anyone else done something similar?
