Forgive me if this is obvious...

I appreciate the minor is tax exempt, but does one have to go through the motions of taxing it and it costs nothing or do you just pretend tax isn’t a thing?

Initially, I think you have to make DVLA aware of your car's historic vehicle status (particularly if it's been off the road for years), but thereafter they send you a reminder each year and you just fill out the details on their website and within a day or so they usually grant you another year's 'tax' but the charge is NIL.

You can tax your car online OR go to a Post Office but, either way, YES you DO still have to tax the car if you plan to drive it or keep it on the road.
It is easy to find the various rules on the DVLA website. Have you recently acquired the car? I assume you have the V5 document for it?

Thanks for the replies. I am acquiring a car this week. The car is currently taxed and MOT’d, but I believe these days the tax doesn’t carry over. I’ll have the little V5 slip, so I guess I can just renew online

No it's not a blanket exemption, in fact it's not any exemption. There is a Historic Class for which the Fee is £0, but you still have to re-tax it every year.

That's because people bandy around the term 'Tax Free'.
Historical Vehicles are NOT Tax Free, those that satisfy the eligibility criteria are entitled to be in the Historic Tax Category, which at present has a £0 annual fee.
But for example, those using their cars as Wedding Hire or their Van to conduct their business are not entitled to be in the Historic Tax Category.
