Drilled bearing cap?

In the process of cleaning and organising parts ready for the rebuild of the newly bored block and realised there was some damage on the face of the caps, underneath the shell.

It turned out it wasn't accidental but had been caused by a drill being passed through it at an angle - not once but three times, two of them so close together that the "tunnels" were breaking into one another.

Any ideas why? Improved oil flow to the bearing?

I cannot open the image attached to your post so unable to give an opinion. Can you please re-post one or more images of the damage.
The flow of oil to the crankshaft bearings is more than adequate with just the one drilling.
