I need to fill up with fuel but can only get E10 with this fuel problem, Is it ok to top up with E10 or will it muck up the running of the engine?
I normally put E5 in but its luck if I can get any E5.

Mixing them won't cause a problem. E5 is 'up to 5% ethanol' and E10 is 'up to 10% ethanol', so you never know what the percentage is for any fill anyway, even if you use the same pump again. If you have no choice but to use E10 then I suggest you add the E10 as soon as possible to get the maximum dilution from the E5, only put in what you need, and add some more E5 as soon as possible. If you can use Esso E5 then better still as that has no ethanol in most (but not all) parts of the country.

Ironically we had to fill our Morris the other day. Everyone was queuing for regular diesel and petrol so we just sailed to the front of the queue to fill up with E5.

I've bought some additive, Classic Valvemaster Plus to add to mine if I have to put E10 in.

Thanks, That is what I need an E10 stabiliser.

How good is the Valvemaster additive? Is it endorsed by the FBHVC?

I did think about putting it there, but this thread seemed rather topical!

As it happens, I did have to put some E10 (Hobsons choice!) in my tank last week in order to be able to travel to (and get back!) from the enjoyable 'Simply British' event at Beaulieu last Sunday. After reading the posts above, I have just ordered some Valvemaster and as soon as some Premium fuel turns up at the garage, I'll further dilute my E10 contents and go for a nice long run!

Assuming you have Ethanol compatible fuel lines etc (need that for E5 and E10) apart from it using more you shouldn't notice any difference by using E10.

I bought a bottle of Lucas Ethanol Stabiliser today. Allegedly treats 300l of fuel, for £9.99.

In other news, I spoke to Burlen Fuel Systems today, and they confirmed that any carb seal kits & fuel pump diaphragms sold by them in about the last 10 years are E10 proof. As I have fitted new seals to my carb, and an E10 compatible fuel hose, all I've got to do is replace the fuel pump diaphragm and I think I'm in the clear. I still think it's probably worthwhile using stabiliser in the fuel, as it'll reduce the amount of water production.

make sure you get it from a reputable source, theres quite a bit of fuel line out there marked s such but which is hopeless, I had some on my Range Rover which had deep cracks in it within 6 months.

I use the classic valvemaster additive when using E10 in my Traveller

In March 1934 edition of Motor Sport Magazine there is an article about alcohol in high compression engines. It mentions Cleveland Discol fuel with 25% alcohol content. I have looked in some of my 50s and 60s motor magazine correspondence columns and don't see any complaints about this fuel regarding carburetor or fuel line failures, I wonder why? I used this fuel in my A.H. Sprite, Lotus Seven, Ford engine, Sunbeam Alpine and Morgan Plus four cars I owned in the late 50s and 60s. Forgot to mention my 1275 engined Pickup with HIF su carb has had to be adjusted 1/2 turn richer to run better on the E 10 95 octane.
