I am currently fitting a new engine based around a machined block I bought from ESM. Only problem is it has been skimmed so no longer has a ID tag.

It seems wrong to rob the ID off anothrr engine or stamp it with the original engines ID.

Any idea what I should do? I was thinking of making up my own number something like "remanxxxdate" where xxx is my initials.

Any idea if this would be an issue for the dvla?

I cannot see any issues with putting whatever number you like on the block.
Just fill in section 28 of the V5C with the new number, sign and send off to DVLA. Retain a copy of the amended V5C.

The v5 has a 948 number on it which may or may not be the 948 it had in when we bought it, being 1969 it would originally have had a 1098.

At least I have a receipt for the engine to send to the dvla that's always been an issue with former projects using secondhand ones.

My advice for what it is worth is not to complicate the issue.
The V5C states 948cc, the new engine is 948cc. All that is changing is the engine number.

ESM's product code.

3 engine codes used during 1969, but 10V IF plastic breather pipe.

the new engine is 1098 as was originally fitted, I doubt they would accept the same engine number for a change in capacity.

Too many engines of different capacities.

If you are going to put your own engine number on the block just do that and amend boxes 24 & 28 of your V5C and send to DVLA whilst retaining a copy.

What good advice, keep a copy of everything sent to any authority, too much can go wrong.

Remember "Too many engine numbers spoil the golden geese in the 3 baskets full of broth in a bush!"

Yes, I’d forgotten that but I do remember to keep my bonnet closed ! Then at least there’s one less set of numbers available to be abused.

Keep the bonnet DOWN if the engine bay is finished in GLOSS paint!
By the by, what is the criteria with "Concours", original nee factory condition or dolled up using new parts that are NOT correct for the vehicle.....?
