Does anyone know why during the recent dry weather BBC has been unwatchable despite doing everything, retune etc.But as soon as the weather changed to rain, reception was brilliant. However, the sun has come out again and it is back to square one?

Assuming you're just on a terrestrial digital service and not satellite, you could try contacting Freeview about your area/transmitter.

For example, weather and engineering works notifications.

I think this problem is one of the downsides of digital terrestrial TV. Once interference reaches a certain point it's an 'all or nothing' situation. At least with the old analogue PAL TV system, interference may have caused a fuzzy picture but it was still normally watchable. Apparently, the problem is caused by signals from other distant transmitters reflecting off the atmosphere in certain good weather conditions. There's a good explanation on the BBC website.

Unfortunately the advice on what you can do about it isn't very helpful. At these times, there is nothing that can be done but to wait until the weather condition changes. You should not retune your television when this happens. :-?

Can you imagine if we adopted the same idea with our cars!
Windscreen wipers not working. Solution: wait unit the rain stops.
Headlamps not working. Solution: wait until the sun comes up.
