I am at the moment replacing the rusty end of the N/S bulkhead Cross member. There is light surface rust towards the middle of the cross member that I can't reach. Should I just leave it or spray rust converter in there?

You can spray rust convertor in to the cross member but is the rust convertor you intend to use a long term or short term convertor? In that I mean does the rust convertor need to be over sprayed (with paint) to seal and be effective. Some convertors allow the metal to go rusty after a while if not sealed.

Ah - I'm using Phosphoric Acid.

Phosphoric is good and very widely used as a rust converter.

However, it might be worth looking at one of the products that has a sealer in its formulation.

use the acid and then spray waxoil into the section,its about as good a result as you can expect for long term protection,I believe you need to wash the acid off after it has converted the rust to clear the painted area since the residue effects the paint /sealer bonding.

Mmmmmmm - that's a hard one, If I spray the acid in to where I can't reach - how do I clean it off?
Is there a substitute for Waxoil that doesn't smell as this is where the heater takes its fresh air?

Maybe wire wool attached to a stick would move some surface rust, vacuum out the residue, then start the treatment you decide on.

How good a welder are you ,could you un-stitch cross-member ,deal with rust ,epoxy prime and weld back together ?

I use Bilt Hamber Deox gel for the bits I can't take off and soak in the citric acid bucket.
The nearside wing on Ted the traveller is only a few years old but rust was starting to take hold in the crevice between the wing and stiffener.

Here's the area after applying a good dose of Deox and left over night



And after a wash off with soapy water



I did get a little bit of flash rust appear when I dried it off with a heat gun but a quick rub with a scotch bright and a squirt of etch primer sorted it out.
It's excellent stuff if you follow the instructions closely and not expensive.
