Is it correct that, if you chose not to MOT your car, that the RAC, AA, Green flag, etc. can refuse to come to your rescue? I'm sure I read it somewhere a while ago and wondered whether it was true.

RAC T&C state:

All vehicles must be insured and hold valid tax and MOT (unless exempt)

As your vehicle is over 40 years old, then it is officially Exempt and having a MOT is optional, so long as your vehicle meets the exemption criteria regarding modifications.

I see no reason why other such recovery companies would have and different clauses.


There's another clause in the RAC T&C that might be of more concern to some people.....

Cover is not provided for company cars or other vehicles used for business, even if you are not using it for business at the time.

I wonder how many people are in breach of that T&C....

My Morris van is excluded by the RAC. Registered as a private vehicle.

Has your van got an MOT Les?

Mot or not the RAC would not cover it.

They would seem to be doing themselves out of business with that attitude. Will they not cover anything they see as a 'commercial vehicle' or is it simply the case that they want people to purchase a business policy? Back in the day a lot of Travellers were used for business purposes and plenty of Saloons were used as company cars, not just vans & pickups.
I wonder how many Minor owners, of any variant, actually use them for business purposes nowadays? According to the DVLA website they would loose the tax exempt status.

"Your vehicle will not be exempt from vehicle tax if:

it’s used for hire or reward (for example, it’s used as a taxi for paying customers)
it’s used commercially for a trade or business"

The RAC recovered our minor van quite a few years ago. I'll need to see if the Pick up is covered.

would not touch rac with a barge pole left me on a1 motorway for 13.5 hrs in

That’s very sneaky! Technically that clause means my daily driver wouldn’t be covered, since I have business cover (due to occasionally commuting to more than one place of work). I wonder how they’d be in practice?

I have Rac and just phoned them as we pick our minor up next weekend and have a 275 mile trip back home in it to do.They told me I am covered and know about the 40 year rule.I also have classic bikes which they said came under the same rules.

I think they might be referring to company vehicles, like a 'commercial' vehicle I mean. Otherwise as has been said, many cars would fall foul of the rule simply because the owner might use it for work once a year! Anyway, how would they know if your car was covered for business use?
