Panels back to the timber

Hello all, I have sanded all the timber down and have finished varnishing it. Now its time to put the panels back to the timber. I’m worried about the gap between the timber and the panels letting water in. Is this where I should use caulking. If so do I put the caulking up to the edge of the timber. Any advise will be greatly appreciated, thanks Paul.

That is exactly what you should do, yes, I used a 3M material which came in strips but I'm sure that any caulking strip will do a similar job. I ran it along the wood just inboard of the edge and then fitted the panels to the wood frame and screwed them onto place. In one or two places the caulking which squeezed out was a little excessive and I trimmed it off with a plastic spatula. It is much better to use too much sealant and see it ooze out than not enough and have a water leak

Thank you, I thought that was the way, but its better to make sure beforehand. Thanks for your help, Paul.
