Hi, welcome to the forum. Could you confirm in which year your car was manufactured as the rear axles were different over time. Also, please describe which washer you mean - is it the one on the hub or the diff? I'm not aware of one on the half shaft, which is retained to the hub by a screw, visible after the brake drum is removed.

The locking washer fits over the end of the axle tube not the axle shaft.
To fit the washer - hook the centre tab into the hole in the axle tube and then slip the rest of the locking washer over the outer end of the axle tube. You may have to wiggle the washer to get it over the end of the axle tube.
The hub nut is not required to go past the washer tab hole in the axle tube.
Fit the locking washer, then the hub nut making sure that you have the right nut for the correct side of the vehicle. L/H-N/S axle nuts are mostly L/H thread (see wksp manual for the car serial number when L/H nuts were incorporated). Tighten the nut (there is no specified torque for the nut but it does need to be done up very tight). Once the hub nut is tight bend over the lock washer against a flat of the hub nut to stop the nut coming undone.
