I've been using Esso super-unleaded in my Mog for years after hearing from a number of sources that it was ethanol-free, but have just come across confirmation from the horse's mouth.

Just run it on standard unleaded and it will be fine. Super isn't worth the extra expense unless you have a 1275 which were designed for it.

With a tank the size of the minor avoiding ethanol isn't going to be possible for many people!
We would therefore advise anyone who has concerns about the presence of ethanol in petrol to use Synergy Supreme+ – providing they do not fill up in Devon or Cornwall, the Teesside area, Scotland or NW England

Yeah, you missed reading the original link....
Esso super unleaded petrol (Synergy Supreme+ Unleaded 97 and Synergy Supreme+ 99 ) is ethanol free (except in Devon, Cornwall, the Teesside area, Scotland and NW England). We would therefore advise anyone who has concerns about the presence of ethanol in petrol to use Synergy Supreme+ – providing they do not fill up in Devon or Cornwall, the Teesside area, Scotland or NW England. The European standard BS EN228 covers the requirements for 0-5% ethanol unleaded petrol, the labelling requirement for zero % ethanol is E5 (as is up to 5%), a E0 label doesn’t exist.
I'm guessing those areas are served from a different refinery.

I believe it’s down to which refinery supplies the fuel to the filling station.

Edit: Just noticed geo has already said same thing above.

Is that so? I've always just used regular unleaded in mine (Midget engine), though it does have a Metro A+ unleaded head, after the original started burning oil (worn valve guides).

I may give some super a go, and see if it makes any difference...

I very much doubt that the 1275 was designed for it, given that super unleaded wasn’t available in the 1960s when the 1275 was brought out. I suspect Mr Javelin is referring to 5 star? My Wolseley Six, with its super-duper high compression 6 cylinder E-Series was meant to run on 5 star, but as long as the timing is retarded appropriately, it runs fine on 95 octane. Granted it can take a bit more advance and run slightly better on today’s super unleaded though.

All the BL 1275 engines are meant to have 97 RON minimum. Says so in the handbooks for Marina, Allegro, Ital, Spridget, whatever. The compression ratio was raised for these engines and to get the best performance out of them you must use the Super blend. The 1098 and below, at least in the Minor, could be ran on petrol of less than 95 RON, but that is the minimum available now. Anybody worrying about ethanol in petrol is not a serious motorist, and that fact is borne out by trouble starting when a vehicle is hardly used.

I don’t know what petrol it was using but the McLaren I was following the other day, took off like a rocket; I couldn’t keep up with it, left my van standing !
