Hi Has anybody out there ,tried to drill an extra hole through the half shaft flange , to put two small cross head screws in as opposed to one ?

The single screw is only there to locate the half-shaft to the hub during hub/half-shaft assembly. When assembled the hub and half-shaft are held together by the wheel studs and wheel nuts. There is no real benefit in fitting a second half-shaft screw.

There's a hole in the brake drum that is to be aligned with the screw so that the screw can be further tightened when the drum screws are tight .

The half shaft screw and the brake drum screws are there for location not security.
The whole is held together by the wheel studs and wheel nuts.
The 1/4" diameter Philips screws cannot produce the same or equal clamping forces as the wheel studs/nuts therefore they are secondary to the wheel studs/nuts in holding the hub assy together.

I put an additional screw fixing in the half shafts!
I did it because I didn't like the idea of the O ring opening up the joint to the hub, seemed to tip it out of square which would the reveal an oily joint.
I realise it's all held together once the wheel nuts are tightened up.
