Get a big piece of wood that fits under the lenght of the door, and support the weight of the door by a trolley jack under the wood. This will enable you to hold the door with one hand to position while you start the bolts with th other hand.
Cheers John - all comments IMHO

Can take a lot of fiddling with washers behind the hinges to get the door to fit in the hole properly, which can take a long, long time.

I know a friendly trader who produces proper door shims from 0.5mm thick to 3.5 mm in 0.5 increments. Saves loads of time mucking about with washers  :D

Aha - that's worth knowing! I've just spent an awfully long time fiddling with the washers that were behind the hinges of the door that came off... :(

On the one I've just done, the hinges on the old door were packed out with thick 'washers' already, so I re-used them, which took ages 'cos (obviously) you need to keep removing the bolts to add/subtract them. If you need to get hold of new bolts, it might be worth investing in some JLH shims as well, but I don't know the correct way of working out what thickness you'll need. Speak to Jonathon!

Firstly fit the door without shims them work it out from the gap to the b-post (with a bit of trig etc..)
Don't expect to get it right first time, especially if the A post is going soft but if you can get a helper, then the door can be removed and refitted a whole lot quicker.

Hello all,

what I usually do is to make up some studs so I can hang any shims (I just make my own, quite easy and far less hassle than washers) then slide the door onto them . Screw the bolts into the other holes then remove the studs. As I normally work single handed this is the best way I've found.

Don't know if you got the answer to your question, but there are steel plates that sit in the door that you bolt into. They are often found hanging around at the bottom of the door :) The good thing about them is you can clean them up nicely so they bolt up easily.

They're plates with threaded holes in them, which should be held loosely captive in there by a cage which often rusts through.

:) lol - captive nuts, in effect, but held loosely so you can adjust door position.

A useful trick is to make a stud (ie get a bolt of the right size and cut the head off) and screw it into the A-post fixing. NOw, with the hinges fitted to the door, you can slide the hing over the stud and use this to take the weight whilst you fit the other bolts. Lastly remove the stud and insert the correct bolt. Now "all" you've got to do is to get it lined up.......
