Wobbly Water Pump Pulley

Whilst checking the front end of my 69 Traveller I noticed the fan was loose even though its 4 fixing bolts were tight. It seems that the rotating spindle of the pump itself is quite wobbly. New pumps are cheap enough (quality??) but has anyone dismantled a pump and successfully repaired it? Workshop manual section DDD.1 is not really very helpful.

I would guess the bearing has worn and as far as I can tell, you can't get replacement bearings, or any other parts.
I changed mine last year because it was leaking, and it's been OK so far, but not done that many hours of use yet.

The bearings are shot if the water pump shaft can be wobbled.
I have just dismantled a genuine BL water pump to obtain the cast iron impellor and I came to the conclusion that it was not worth the effort and I have a press and a good selection of tools to do the job.
There are good water pumps out there but not all water pumps are equal.
The last water pump I purchased came from Mini Spares.

I would not recommend purchasing a water pump with pressed steel impellor as the impellor is prone to rusting away and the next thing is you have a overheated engine as the water is not being circulated because there is no impellor.

I just checked my records and it was actually almost 2 years ago i changed mine.
It was from ESM and like Phil says, a cast impeller.
Currently out of stock at ESM though, the same as Phil's minispares link.

which appears to be in stock :)

Phil is always good for detail informations :D - I will have alook at the mini spares ones as well.

This is the one I need , is it not?

The 1098cc and 948cc water pumps are interchangeable.

Only when you try and fit a water pump with a deep impellor to a 948cc engine would you possibly encounter problems as the impellor can foul the cylinder casting behind the pump. This can be overcome by relieving the block internal casting directly behind the impellor.

Fitting the water pump in the Mini Spares link above is overkill as you do not require a high capacity pump.

The ESM pump is more than adequate for your needs.

What ever pump you fit you do need to ensure that there is clearance behind the impellor. Rust and corrosion can reduce the clearance so check/fit the water pump without the gasket and see if you can rotate the pump without encountering resistance.

One problem I have encountered with new after market pumps is the clearance between pump impellor and pump body which can effect the pump performance. See BMC Wksp man section DDD.1. I have had to press the impellor further onto the spindle to achieve the correct clearance.
The clearance should be 0.020" to 0.030".

At the time, I believed my engine to be a 948, only more recently did I discover it's really a 1098; but in fact, it was a like-for-like replacement, it was a short impeller pump that was previously fitted.
