diff drain plug - magnet clearance

evening gents. when draining out my diff to replace the oil, i noticed that when feeling around the plug area there were some very small metal shards. now i have magnetic plugs on the engine and gearbox drain plugs, but none seem to be available for diff.
i was going to araldite on a neodymium magnet to the diff plug, but was wondering what the max circumference and depth magnet i can use is?

Check the diameter of the hole in the diff case, subtract a couple of millimetres and there’s your size.

Hi Les, yup getting the diameter is easy enough for me, but it's the depth I'm most interested in as don't want a magnet ashing against the diff!

Can you put something (blunt end of 3/8 drill) in the drain plug hole to establish max length?

I make them for the MG T series differentials but on these axles there is no issue with clearance. I make sure the magnet is an interference fit and I press it in using a large vice and don't just rely on the glue.
