would 7"x15" wheels fit on a morris minor without any rubbing

also, would it be a hugh job to get hubs re-drilled out to 4.5" PCD.

thanks

George

would have said yes on the front to clear trunnions.
165 tyres give about 8mm clearence without spacers

Hello George,

yes, I would say it is difficult, if not impossible to safely re-drill the existing hubs to 4.5 PCD.
Fitting 7" wide wheels is probably possible, as long as the offset is correct although you may need to flare the wings and put up with less than ideal front steering geometry.

I would have thought, on that basis, that 7" would be too wide. 7" = just under 180mm, so you would want to be putting a 185 profile on which is 20mm more than the 165!

That said it would depend very much on the offset, if it was a 0 offset or a small number you'd probably be OK on the trunnions, but then youd have trouble in the wheelarches with a 15" tyre unless you ran a very low profile.

I have heard of people running 185's on the front, but normally on a minilite or smilar 13" wheel.

I wouldn't go any wider than a 6" rim on the front together with a 195 section tyre. The offset you need is 18-24mm depending on the hubs you are using. 41/2" pcd should not be produced on a standard hub as it doesnot allow enough strength to be left on the hub. Be carefull when re drilling stud patterns to fit non minor wheels. Make sure you use the correct size studs for the new wheel, do not simply re fit the minor ones. We have just had a pickup in with a Fiat TC motor running a Ital axle re drilled to minor PCD, needless to say the centerbore of the wheel was incorrect i.e to large so the wheel did not seat on the hud at all, as a result the rim was allowed to move upto 6mm on the studs, resulting in three studs snapping off. not good on a machine capable of well over the legal speed limits. Always make sure that the studs are upto the job and are the correct diameter/strength, and that the center of the wheel locates to some degree to the hub. Make up a shim if need be , but never machine the wheel to adjust PCD or center bore.

But thats on a 13" rim isn't it?

With a 17" (unless on really low profiles) you are bound to get problems surely?

Ahh - thats what I thought I remembered from Brighton ;)

George is looking at 7x15's which could be a prob (unless he runs 30 profiles or something - LOL)

as it happens I might have a set of 5 available soon......

My pickup is on a marina front/rear PCD do is a real paint to convert over, so if I cant they might well be up for sale for less that MD or ESM would do them for!!

I'll keep in touch!

7" = just under 180mm, so you would want to be putting a 185
You'd want something like a 205 tyre on a 7" rim - the rim size is measured at the inside of the rim not the outside and the tyre is profiles to curve round to the outside edge of the rim - therefore ad 1" per side for a fairly normal fit. For a more guaranteed answer, you need to check what is recommended by the tyre manufacturer.
If you can get 6 or 6.5" rims then a 195/50/15 is a good size as it is 'fairly' close to the normal rolling radius of a 145/14.
With any rim - especially wide ones you need to check the clearance to the trunnion - best to aim for around 10mm as the tyre sticks out a bit further. Obviously if you fit a wider tyre on the same rim, the trunnion clearance reduces!

As for it being a good idea or not - standard Minor suspension has its limits so there's little point to go wider than 165 (175 at a push) with the standard set up.
If the car and suspension are well tuned (more than a 1275) then you may well get some benefit of wider rubber, but otherwise it's a big expense just to be fashionable.
