Just curious: Camshaft axial movement

Post by Michiel »

Horizontal camshaft movement forward is restricted by a triangular bracket on the engine front plate. But how is it stopped going backwards into the oil pump?

By the same triangular plate.
The triangular plate is trapped between the front face of the front camshaft journal and the camshaft gear.
The lateral float of the camshaft should be between 0.003" and 0.007" and is regulated by the depth of the central boss of the camshaft gear.

The lathe cutter is pointing at the thrust face of the camshaft gear which the front face of the triangular plate rubs against.

I think I’m right in saying one side of this plate has a bearing face, to go against the camshaft.

You are right. The camshaft front journal forward face rubs against the white metal face of the triangular plate.
There is really only the need for one white metal thrust face as the action of driving the distributor from the camshaft pushes the camshaft drive gear away from the non white metal face of the triangular thrust plate.
