Trying on my new hubcaps (plain without the 'M' embossed) for my series II seems like really tight to get them in! I'm afraid it would be also much harder to take them out! anyone had a similar experience?

Hi Mark,
The obvious point, which you have noted, is that they should be a tight fit but not so tight that they won't actually pop over the last stud.
Yours look like they are slightly too small and sat on the stud........
Are these 'brand new' remanufactured items or just 'new to your car'?
If they are the former I would be speaking to the supplier, with a view to getting replacements, rather than try to force them on, you have grounds to complain there.
Best wishes,
Mike.

It looks way too small, as Mike says go back to the supplier.

But the diameter seems to be 8.5 inches exactly

Without being able to calculate the exact central point and then being able measure accurately across it they may look right but be slightly out, which is what yours appear to be.
Close but no banana.
Send them (any that don't fit) back and request replacements, better that than trying to force them on and damaging your wheel / studs in the process, or when you need to get them back off again.
An angle grinder shouldn't be part of standard equipment......
If you do this and the replacements don't fit either, send the whole set back, request a refund and look for a different source.
Best wishes,
Mike.

Are they the right type? There were a couple of different types of SII wheels, so I wonder if they had different caps?

Good point.
What year is your car and do you know what was originally fitted, for example do you have an old set that you thought was too scruffy to put back on?
Did they have the embossed M on them?
A picture of your wheels, without hubcaps, may help the experts on here (of which I definitely don't claim to be one).
Best wishes,
Mike.

Thank you so much with some grease and determination and turning round cups on different wheels they finally went in and out with relative ease

Result! I like your whitewall tyres - they break up the uniform colour of the SII cars nicely. Where did you get them?

The inside lip of the hubcap deforms after a while so you get a 'sweet spot' for popping the caps back on.
