I managed to remove all the mangled up grotty brass screws from my gearbox tunnel cover, and have had a set of new ones delivered.

There are four slightly longer ones than all the others, does anyone know for sure which holes the long ones are actually for ?

The longer screws fit into the four top gearbox cross member captive nuts.

I would advise that you run a 1/4" BSF tap through all of the captive nuts and smear the new screws with copper ease or similar before fitting.

Great minds think alike. I have actually just come back indoors and read your reply having spent quite some time running a tap through 31 holes for the cover screws, I had come to the same conclusion that was where the four longer screws should go as well.

I have a couple of missing captive nuts next to each other where the master cylinder cover fits that I am just off out to repair next, I will just make a plate with two tapped holes in it and screw that to the underside of the chassis rail lip.

If those "missing" nuts are nearest the gearbox, then look on the crossmember (if it's out) as the longer screws go through the floor and into the Xmember where the captive nuts are located. Of course, if he missing nuts are mnissing from elsewhere, and/or the Xmember is still in the car, then ignore this advice.
