Non handed hub nuts

Hi This is my first position so if I get things wrong, sorry.
The renovation of my 1955 car started just after Christmas but with the present conditions has become far more extensive, I won't be using it for some time. My first problem was that there was no dedicated groove for the "O ring on the rear wheel hub, but that has been kindly answered already, many thanks. My next query is that the hub nuts are not handed. I was so surprised that I took off the side I had finished to check, and had to order another paper gasket as a result. Is this right? Well, it is right but why? I had an MG in the 60s and the spinners were definitely handed.
Thanks
David
