803 timing cover felt?

I pulled the cover off of the only decent donor engine here. The cover is the type shown above. Do you have the lever the inside part out to get the felt in?

The felt just push fits into the groove. To remove just hook it out of the groove. The felt seal may have gone hard and therefore may be hard to remove.
If fitting the felt seal it needs to be soaked in engine oil overnight.
To be honest the felt seal is a failure compared to the lip seal. Better to ditch that timing cover with felt seal and fit a cover with the rubber lip seal.

Only other cover here is an A+ style which means trimming some reinforcement off of the front plate. Oh well, I might as well go for a duplex conversion at the same time.
Next job is to sort out a water pump. The 1275 ones here on the shelf have no bypass but they don't have overly long impellers. Might just be a little Welding job.

Never easy, is it. :roll:

Rob you do not need overly long impellors. You just need an impellor of just sufficient size to move the required amount of water around the block.
Stay clear of pressed steel impellors.

I had an idea that some would foul the wall of the front cylinder, hence the small bore ones being shallower. Guess it is another school day for me. :D

Interesting what calver says about saving 4hp with an electric pump. I have all the hardware here, including the BMC blanking plate for the front of the block. I have a BMW 7-series pump that I was saving for an Austin Seven.

I have a Davis Craig electric water pump system with thermostatic control fitted to my Minor.
Whilst it does work I am in the process of removing the system and going back to the impellor type water pump with large drive pulley as I believe it is more efficient in getting water to the back of the head and block.

‘Tis true - some pumps do foul the front cylinder on small block engines 😀

The rule of thumb as regards the length of water pump impellors is - for small bore blocks = short impellor. For large bore blocks = long impellors.

If you want (or need) to fit a water pump with a long impellor to a small bore block just relieve the forward face of No: 1 bore casting which faces the water pump aperture. The amount of relieving is not much and can be done in a few minutes. Use a vacuum cleaner to suck away the grindings as you relieve.
