Hi all, my fuel gauge isn’t working ! It’s a 1970 saloon with a black speedo, ive checked through old posts and have earthed the sender wire which makes the needle go to full so I’m guessing the gauge itself is fine ? What is the next thing I need to check ? Thanks in advance ..,

I would say earth the sender wire in the boot and note the reading...

My understanding is that the black gauges are different from the gold gauges. Black uses heated bi-metal pointer, and gold is magnetic coils. Is this true? If so, do they use different senders? Is the voltage stabiliser critical to both types, or only one? If so, which one?

Hi,
You are correct, the fuel tank senders are different for early (gold speedo) and late (black speedo) cars.
The voltage stabiliser is for the later (black speedo / fuel gauge) cars only.
Best wishes,
Mike.

If you have a multi meter check the continuity between the terminal on the sender and earth
If it’s high (infinity) then the coil is likely to be open circuit and will require replacement.
The test you have already carried out proves the gauge and wiring
