Hello all.
I have a morris traveller with the 5 speed gearbox conversion.

Daft question, but where is the oil filler plug? ive been laying under the car in my garage on the off side. I can't see it. Also should i top the box up with EP80/90?

I'm assuming this is a ford type 9 unit?
If so then there should be a filler plug (image below) but no drain plug unfortunately. It is possible to fit one yourself but you have to watch that you don't drill through the internals when making the hole for it.

The oil used in the Ford gearbox is EP 80/90.
I would not attempt to drill and fit a drain plug without removing the gearbox from the car and stripping the gearbox casing to a bare shell.
Any swarf that is not fully removed can seriously damage the gearbox.
There should be a magnet in the bottom of the main gearbox case that will attract and hold any iron particles.

The Ford type 9 gearboxes supplied by Peter Gamble of Hi Gear Engineering do have a drain plug fitted. He does have his own castings for the rear housing.

Correct-. The drain plug is mentioned on his website. Peter has a nice set-up. You can see his company name cast in on the photo taken last year. Peter insists that he supplies the first oil filling used during the warranty period. He specifies a different oil:..

Oil for Ford T9 Gearboxes.
75W90 Gear oil API GL4
Examples:
Comma SX 75W90GL4
Redline MT 75W90GL4

According to the Type 9 web site (link in my post above) the lighter oil does help to make gear changes easier.

Searching the web - several Type 9 users report as having filled their gearboxes with EP80 without incurring problems.
A straight EP90 may be a bit thick and cause difficulty clearing the synchro cones leading to a notchy gear change.

On the MG forums the general consensus is that the Redline oil is the best. I have it in mine and it seems quite good.

I would suggest using the EP 75W/90 multigrade oil. It gives you get the benefit of the lighter oil when cold, but still gives full protection when hot as well.

I use the same oil in the Toyota T50, and it is excellent. Hot/cold, the changes are slick and quiet! The T50 does not use the EP variety, but the effect of the multigrade viscosity range is the same.

As far as I am aware there is no oil drain plug fitted to a Ford type 9 gearbox other than that mentioned above.
Therefore I am unable to post up a picture of a Ford type 9 gearbox drain plug.
Ford considered the large magnet situated in the base of the gearbox casing to be sufficient. As regards my Ford gearbox - a needle roller was found attached to the magnet on its first strip/rebuild since leaving the Ford factory so I do know that the magnet does its job thankfully.

Did you still retain the magnet which fits into the sump?
If you did the magnet is so strong that all you will get out of the drain hole is oil. The magnet will still hold onto the steel/iron bits.

Yes, right in the middle of the ring magnet , " The magnet will still hold onto the steel/iron bits. " , so when one does an oil change any ferrous will be grabbed and held to the magnet , .... better than floating round in the box ? any non-ferrous will be drained .
