Diff worn

Hello,
I bought a second hand diff to try in my pickup, but it has got a lot of slack in it. I put a new oil seal in it and did the nose nut up really tight, but there is loads of play in it . Is there an easy fix, or am I going to have to send it off somewhere? Any advice please.

Can you please define 'loads of play'.
How many degrees does the pinion turn from contact to contact with the crown wheel teeth?

In distance, about 8 or 9mm, maybe a bit more.

Did you torque the pinion nut up to 140lbf ft?
The movement described does not seem excessive.
Check the torque again and if the diff does not feel rough to operate/turn - fit and enjoy.

If it is not leaking and not making noise leave it alone!

Thanks for the advice. My torque wrench only measures up to 120, so I gave it a bit more with a power bar.
Is there more of a risk of snapping a half-shaft with a worn diff?

The small amount of wear (if indeed it is wear) in your diff will have very little if any effect on the half-shafts.
