engine date

Post by jtd.75 »

Hi everybody can anyone tell me the age of my MM1000 1098 engine, I went to a local vintage Steam Rally here on Anglesey over the week-end and to my suprise I was told that my MM had a van bonnet on and also it was not the original engine in it. The VIN no/ is M/AS5D 1017637 and the engine no/ is RKM1122E10425 or it could be RKM112E10125, eye sight in a dimly lit garage not what it use to be. :(

Crikey! Your quoted numbers are nothing like the normal Minor
chassis or engine numbers! The 1098 Minor engine will start with
10MA.......10ME...10AB..... or 10V.... All gold seal factory
reconditioned engines start with 8G...
Do your quoted numbers agree with the registration document?
Have you looked beneath the exhaust manifold at the front end
just behind the front engine mounting plate where you may see
a plate on the crankcase which will say '1100' or another sum
which is the size of the engine.

What a strange coincidence I was a BT telephone engineer for 37 years (now retired) and in the early days GPO I use to drive a Morris Minor Van WD Green was the colour in those days, and perhaps it would explain why it also has a van bonnet

Well the 10MA-U-H prefix is correct for a 1098cc High compression
engine. If you look carefully(probably obscured by paint) on the
bulkhead just to the right of where the bonnet release rod appears
you should find the chassis number stamped into the metal. No prefix
just the number. If you find it we can date it.

deepens!

If you find that number and it IS 1017637 as you quoted then the
vehicle was made around December 1962 to spring 1963?

Hi Willie I seem to have read somewere that the letters before the engine no/ represent the model the paint colour. M/AS5D the S is for saloon!! not sure about the others though and the engine no/ defiantly is RKM1122E10425 and was painted silver at one time but not sure if that was the original colour.

The numbers before the ENGINE number do not give any details of the
car type/colour/ etc. That is the function of the prefixes on the CAR
number. Your car prefixes mean: M(morris),A (A series engine),
2 (2 door), S5 (series five), D (de-luxe)

I am a little confused since your last quote of the car prefixes
was 'MAS5' if you have a 2 door then there should be a '2' after
the 'A'? MAS5 is for a 4 door car according to my info.
