looking to get a new trolley jack what sort of size would I need
1.5 or 2 ton??

I have an earlier version as my main workshop jack and was supplied by Machine Mart. It has given me good service over many years.

The smaller jacks have a reduced footprint and can be unstable when fully extended but saying that I do have a Jack King model 10079, capacity 2 ton jack which again has given me good service. This 2 ton jack has mostly been used for changing wheels which does not require the jack to be fully extended.

So at the end of the day it is horses for courses but stability and safety is paramount.

Do not forget to place an axle stand securely under the vehicle being lifted before attempting to access the underside of the vehicle. Also make sure that the vehicle cannot move by chocking the remaining wheels.

A one ton trolley jack could be more than adequate to lift the vehicle completely off the surface in one go. However, as Phil indicates, that is not the whole story!

Most people only lift one corner, or one end, of the vehicle at a time. Lift height and stability are far more important than the lifting ability. Good mechanical advantage is a useful attribute as well. A long handle usually helps in this respect.

This is the shaped block that I use for lifting the front of the car. It fits under the front cross member and is used with my main jack.

I recently got one of these.
At 2T it's excessive for the Moggie, but what I liked was the way the pump handle could be used at an angle to the line of the jack, thus making it good in confined spaces, like my single garage.
