803 cc Oil Filter.
Someone has fitted an Alternator to my 1955 Series 11 original 803 cc engine. Something I would not have done myself however, what concerns me is the engine oil filter. This is a screw-in type, which, simply screws into the engine block with a rubber-type washer. There is only less than a finger distance between the bottom of the Alternator and the top of the oil filter. This gives me the idea that maybe when fitting the Alternator, the oil filter was in the way or maybe not. Any idea’s please if this is correct.

Well, if there is enough clearance that the alternator is nor rubbing/rattling against the filter then I wouldn't worry. But, if I recall correctly, there should be some sort of spring clip that is screw-tightened around the filter to secure it properly.....

As my '55 Series II doesn't have it's original 803, I've no experience of that engine, but I do know I'm now confused. I thought the 803 oil filter was the other side of the engine from the dynamo.... ??? ??

Folks - you are all aware that the 803 had a screw-in metal filter as standard, right, and that the images shown are of different engines?

Geoberni has posted piccies of a 918cc sidevalve engine as fitted to the Series MM cars - rather different from the 803cc A-Series with by-pass filter, fitted to the Series II cars

Clampit - that is the standard oil filter for your 803 engine and is the original type - 'tis true though that it is missing the little clamp that stops it form coming loose, as posted by Phil.

See, I told you I knew nothing about the 803 engine

My baby Austin a30 has a screw in oil filter. Easily sourced. I’d always assumed it was a modification, but perhaps not? Original 803 cc a-series.

If it’s like the one pictured by the OP, it’s original. The full-flow type with the disposable paper element, mounted vertically, cane in with the 948 engine.

As I said it is the original 803 cc engine but I think why I wondered about the fitting of the filter was that the oil light sometimes comes on with a hot engine on a slow tick over and I thought maybe the oil filter was restricting oil flow. I guess not.
The good news is that the engine sounds and runs like a sewing machine.

Thank you Declan. Is this simple restrictor available in the UK?
How long ago was this and have there been any more reliable oil filters from the major spare part suppliers since this was known? Which make of filters should be avoided.
It is very important to me to keep my 803 cc engine going as it's part of the history of the car.

No they are not available in the UK. They are made in Switzerland by Rolf Corbat from the Swiss Morris Minor club. I was sure I had one here on stock but I have searched high and low but cannot find it. If you want I can ask Rolf to make one for you.

Possibly Club Spares has a 'proper job' NOS one or more? Would be worth checking.................

If you find it great. In the mean time, I will replace the oil switch and setup my smiths oil gauge.

When you have the oil pressure gauge fitted compare your pressure readings to the readings in the restrictor article. You will then see clearly if trouble is on the way.
PS-I still haven't found the elusive restrictor.

The description suggests that this has the original constrictor.

Any updates? Was the ebay filter OK? Is it a simple matter of measuring the bore of the central feed tube?

As mentioned in Rolf Corbat's article the filter bore should be 1.5mm.

The ebay (BULL MOTIF) 803cc oil filter coded GFE107 looks just like the other oil filters I have purchased directly from this Company.
The size IN (for want of a better term or the white plastic insert), suggests a little larger than 2mm but not as great as 2.5mm so, too large by the article. My method of measurement was to fit a 2 and 2.5mm drill bit end into the hole. I think this should be close enough
Bull Motif has chosen not to reply to my email on the subject. Oh, I can see why now, the story continues to find another filter.
