Mini Waterpump on Moggie

Post by johnm »

This may have been done before, but my search didn't help.

Could anyone confirm that a 1098 mini waterpump will fit a 1098 Minor please?

Finding one would be tricky - the Mini and Metro were never 1098cc - the Mini used the 850, 998 and 1275 engines. The Metro didn't get the 850. Which engine is it from? I'd guess the 998cc as those seem to be most plentiful. :)

It's a brand new one! The guys book basically said any 1098 cc Rover, I took that to mean mini and that's what the book said but no mention of minor:-(

There was a 1098 Mini. It was badges as an 1100. They used to be clubmans mosly I think.

Not sure about the 1098 pump, but I'm using a Mini 1275 one on my Ital engine in my Minor!

Never... [goes off to check in reference book]

[finds mention of those nasty square-fronted affairs]

[takes spoon and starts eating humble pie]

 I didn't know there was an 1100 mini, but sure enough between 1975 and 1980 they produced a fair assortment of the things alongside the 998 varient.

Still can't help to shed any light on whether it would fit. The simplest way could be to try - and use the Minor Traders mail order services if it all goes awry... :)

Of course it will fit your Morrie ! Just check if it has a by-pass hose connection - if not then blank off the connection on the cylinder head, and thank the Gods that you will never be troubled by a leaking/burst bypass ever again ! Also just check that the impeller does not foul on the casting inside the engine - ie check it can be turned easily by hand as you tighten it in place. If you have fitted a 12g940 head - you will need to grind/file some metal off the top edge of the new pump to get clearance from the head.

Thanks bmcecosse, it's a standard unleaded 1098 head, and the pump does have a bypass connection, I guess we're in business!

Just make sure the impeller can turn before fitting up the drive belt !

Fitted today and all seems well!

I also replaced the heater hoses, just as well as it turned out, one was split under dash, but amazingly not leaking!

I also replaced the bypass hose with a short length of heater hose and I think it's a mod I would recommend.

The proper bypass hose is a thickwall section anyway. But by far the best mod is to eliminate it altogether. It's entirely useless and unecessary - a bit like the human Appendix really !

I think my (old 1098cc) engine would disagree with you there.

The bypass hose is there to allow a circulation of cooling water prior to the thermostat opening so I personally wouldn't do away with it.

Just drill one or two 1/8" holes in the rim of the thermostat instead. Saves all that hassle with the bypass hose ! Just think over the years of the misery that little hose has caused to A series owners. Finally, with the Metro - Rover discovered it's not necessary !!
