Oil type to use

Hi there,
I am a new Morris Minor owner & want to get advice on the correct oil to use.
The notes I was provided with when I got my 1959 MM stated the oil type was 20/50 (if my memory is correct) which I think is the oil for classic cars. I think that is the oil to use in the event of a oil change/top up. Just want to ensure that I am using the correct stuff.
Also what oil would I need for the carburettor & gear box.
Any advice would be very much appreciated thank you 🙂.

20/50 will cover the engine, gearbox and carb dash pot/damper.

Welcome to the world of Minor ownership. Your memory serves you well, 20/50 it is. You will find a couple of previous topics of interest/use:

If there's anything else that you want to know, then just ask.

Thanks, I should have mentioned that there is a 1.3 Morris Marina engine in my 1959 MM, not the typical 948CC. Does that make any difference?

Engine oil and carb dashpot oil advice exactly the same as for the standard Minor. What type of gearbox do you have fitted, as that may well be different. Also. what back axle as that will need oil too.

I noticed that you had two identical threads running and were collecting replies to both, so I've merged them together into a single topic, all replies are now in this thread.

Thanks, gearbox is a 1275 Midget. Not sure about the back axle though 🙂.

EP80/90 GL4 Hypoid oil in the back axle.

Do not use GL5 as it easts the phosphor bronze parts.
