Hi all, I’ve added some pictures of my laygear. It doesn’t look to bad to me but I’m no gearbox expert! Does it look ok to reuse or do I need a better/ new one?

I think that’s acceptable, that end does tend to suffer more.

I would agree that it looks perfectly serviceable, actually very good. First dosen't look like it has had too much abuse.

That's good news, thanks. Has anybody got a picture of a new selector as I'm trying to determine how much "meat" should be on the inner faces to compare to mine?

It is possible to round off the chipped teeth on a lay gear using a little hobby grindstone that fits in an electric drill. If you leave it like that it may get worse.
It is difficult to tell how worn the selector forks are just by looking. You really need to measure the inside using vernier callipers. But they are probably OK.

I would advise against putting a grindstone to any gear teeth as they are hardened and grinding may break through the hardening and create more wear and at a very quick rate.

The selectors do appear to be worn but the amount of wear can only be confirmed by measuring.

Thanks , how much play on the selectors would be classed as ok Phil? Although I may just replace as a matter of course as I have the box apart.

There should be a little play between the selector forks and the synchro units but that play should not be excessive. Excessive wear may not allow the synchro units to go fully home or makes it difficult to engage gear which manifests itself in sloppy gearchanges.

Thanks Phil, I'll check. Just had a look on usual suppliers sites and a new third/forth selector 22A471 seems unobtainable !

I have done a search through the various marques that use the 1098cc gearbox and you are right - 22A471 new stock currently unavailable.

There are some S/H items on 'e' bay at a reasonable price but unfortunately they do not show you the inside of the yoke.

All I can suggest is that you obtain a S/H item (or even a S/H gearbox) and compare the wear and use the best you have; otherwise it means going to a 1098cc gearbox refurbishment company and seeing what they can do for you.

How does the yoke feel on the synchro hub? Does it feel as if there is excessive movement?

I’ve just had a measure up Phil and 1/2 selector has .017 play and 3/4 has .016 ? They don’t really feel to sloppy to do there job?

With those clearances I would suggest that they are serviceable especially so considering the cost of replacements if they were available.

Therefore I would put it all back together and use.

I'd say your laygear and selectors look fit for further service unlike an elderly vauxhall box I used to have. I guess through wear the needle's escaped from their correct positions and we're going round with the teeth of all gears!
The driving effect was quite 'different' to say the least, the box was a right off.

A gearbox does not have to be worn for lay gear needle rollers to be found in the bottom of the box. Thankfully the Ford 2000E gearbox fitted to my Minor back then had a magnet in the bottom and that gathered up the couple of loose needle rollers. I suspect that it had been like that since new as the box was not that old and had no signs of wear. The needle rollers were refitted and the box continued to be used with no ill effects.
