Ballasted Ignition coil

G'day,

Has anyone had any experience in fitting a coil and matched ballast resistor to a Mog?

The method I've read on the web suggests using a 15A relay to bypass the resistor while the ignition is cranking, thus supplying full power to the coil while the starter is going.

I'm currently experimenting with this system, based on the first of these two sites, the second one seems similar. It doesn't seem to make a lot of difference - maybe something is not right?

Use a Mini type. It has a pink wire which is the 'resistor' and the starter solenoid switches it in/out when starting. Get hold of a Mini workshop manual for details. Not sure what years they used them, but my 1985 Mini 1000 had one.

Dont know why you would want to fit one Shawn as the Moggie is one of the easiest car to start.

Engine would only start at the point when you released the key. I'm working on the belief that this means the starter was only allowing a weak spark at the plugs. Tried different standard coils, including a brand new one - no result.

Car runs, idles and revs really well, just takes a while to start.

Hello Shawn,

a quick check to see if the ignition switch\wiring is correct, run a temporary wire from the battery to the coil negative, (if positive earth) and try a start. If it fires easily you have an ignition switch or wiring fault.

You certainly should not need to fit a ballasted coil on the Minor.
Check the voltage before and DURING operation of the starter if there
is an excessive drop then you have a dodgy battery or charging
circuit, or a starter which is drawing far too much current. The fact
that it fires at the instant that you release the starter obviously points
to too high a voltage drop.
