Diff casing

On a 1955 Minor...
Diff casing black painted or bare aluminium???
Any ideas?

Axle casing is (and therefore black) , but the diff part is aluminium.

I believe the axle casing was painted black and the unpainted alloy diff casing attached during sub assembly stage.
The alloy will need some surface protection or it will 'deteriorate'.

No preservation is required for the outside of the alloy diff housing. It will not deteriorate and can be left bare metal.
