Sticking in an ital engine.... things you shoukd know

Gaskets. Don't forget gaskets. If you strip your engine to check it over before hand, then you're either going to recycle a lot of cornflakes packets, or you're going to have lots of new shiny gaskets around.

Hylomar blue is very handy, especiailly when all your gaskets are made from Morrisons Shredded Wheat packets.

The pulley centre bolt is not removeable using a screwdriver in the flywheel ring gear, whatever it may say in the haynes manual. It is removable using a very large adjustable wrench, a 4lb lump hammer and a crowbar in the ring-gear. Indeed it comes of remarkably easily.

The following components have to go: The nice semi-ciscous coupled fan, it won't go, however hard you try. The water outlet on top of the enigine isn't (really) usuable (although I am until I can get the one off my old engine).

The manifold is evil.

The engine does not slot back in, however briefly the haynes manual covers it. 4 hours (although it was just me and a crane - and I've never done it before).

The coil needs relocating. It won't fit where the engine mounts used to be, however, my already modified) coil bracket was modified to go over the alternator :-)

Putting the front panel back on is a nightmare of unheard of proportions.

Check that your valve adjusters move before putting the enigne in the car, or you're going to end up running with one of the valves at 20thou instead of 14 thou clearance until you can shift the little swine.

Save all your hoses, use the ones that fit.

One of my neighbours is an engineer- and he gave a few different types of sheets of gasket paper. Thats handy to have around if you need to make up the odd gasket or two. I think using the proper paper if you need the odd gasket is better than using cornflake packets! ;)

Although, if it works, then it works.

I also think that BL cars from the 1970s and 1980s were a BIG step down in quality compared to cars from the 60's (I've experienced a few of these BL cars). This extends to components in the engine. I know this because I used to live next door to a Longbridge supervisor!

Yes be careful using cardboard or similar for gasket material, it may not be suitable for the pressure, temperature or fluid to which the joint is subjected or intended.

Agree with the others Kate I thought that only applied to thermostat housing gasket`s and similar.
Check that your valve adjusters move before putting the engine in the car, or you're going to end up running with one of the valves at 20thou instead of 14 thou clearance until you can shift the little swine.
But I thought you had taken the head of to check the engine condition ect, obviously overlooked them....

It is now in and running then, or are there a few adjustments still to be done.

Aye, it's not in use on all the gaskets - just some. I'm kind of expecting to have to replace them in the not too distant future - so I'll get in the gaskets and just keep them around. We used gasket material for uh, one, I think. Mostly I did actually have the gaskets though :-)

The engine's in and running, but I need to fiddle with the new coil mounting (the alternator bolt behind it needs to be done up tighter) and the exhaust leaks like a dog by a tree. Which, obviously, I also need to fiddle with. I want to go find a separate exhaust manifold that fits, but that can wait until I'm a little more sorted.

Halfords (sometimes) stock gasget paper but it is very worthwhile to have a few sheets around rather than wait until you need some. I got my last lot from the local autofactors - Halfords had run out which was a bit of a #### thing to find out at 3:59pm on a Sunday :lol:
