I am in the process of upgrading the engine and gearbox in my Traveller from 1098 4 speed to a 1275 5 speed.

The 1098 has always had a M35G starter motor and the 1275 has a M35J.
I have looked on the forum and it indicates the M35J is a later type, but both are suitable.
I have a M35G that is fairly new. Can someone confirm both OK for 1275 and is it best to use the know new M35G and keep the M35J as a spare

Any information on which to use would be appreciated.

I THINK the difference is that the earlier version has a wrap-round cover at the back over the brushes, and the later one does not. They have the same bolt fitting, pinion etc. The pinion can be either 9T or 10T, and both work with the same flywheel ring gear, which seems very odd, but I have had both and they do! The 10T spins the engine over noticeably faster.

The Lucas M35G has the removable cover over the brushes.

The Lucas M35J has the pressed steel rear end cover/brush holder.

The 1275cc engine was fitted with the Lucas M353J starter.

Either can be used with the 1275cc engine.
