Hi I have fitted to my 1275 engine a hif38 carb with a large bore extractor manifold , it runs quite ok but the plugs are showing it running lean the mixture screw turning it clockwise doesn't seem to be altering it do you think the next size needle would help .thanks

A HIF44 is better suited to the 1275.. Getting hard to find now. My 1275 runs well with a 44.

Which version of HIF 38 is it? Some were designed to run ultra-lean, such as those fitted to the Austin Metro 1.0E.

As said above, a HIF 44 is better suited to a 1275cc A-series.

It does sound like it might be easier to try a richer needle instead, as you mention in your inital post. :)

Knowing which needle you have in there currently would help!
