Hello all members,
I have recently installed a 1098 recon engine in my Minor but am lacking a dipstick for oil checking. This item is not currently available from the usual suppliers so I am going to try and have one made locally. I would be grateful if a club member with a 1098 engine could provide me with a measurement of the dipstick blade, ie., part which is inserted into dipstick tube, and also, the measurement for the oil 'full' mark taken from the bottom of the dipstick itself. You shouldn't need to make one! There must be 100s of them around. Have you honestly tried all of the many Minor specialists for this?
I never have much trouble finding any part for my cars but it does sometimes involve a few phonecalls or emails......
The Minor is about the easiest car in the world to get parts for surely?
The dipstick on the 1098 engine fits into a plastic tube, so make sure you also have that.

OK that sounds a little flippant, but the point is that just because they are out of stock with the usual suppliers, they do come up on fleabay, I've seen several included in 'Job Lots' over the past year, and the one above is clearly listed on its own.

Don't forget that the A Series engine was in production long after the Minor ceased, so there are other choices out there, such as Mini spares retailers.

I have real issues with the ESM Search on occasions; it's just not well set up.

To take this case as an example, if you search Dipstick as one word, it only returns the plastic tube; but if you search it as 2 words, then it returns 6 results!

Yes it can be frustrating, I agree but still and all they are my preferred supplier for most (not all!) items.

Ive always used a tap washer rather than the 'proper' washer on dipsticks, partly because I've got them to hand in my plumbing box of goodies, but also you can then select one which is a tight fit, so less likely to slip off when checking your oil.

I find it much simpler to telephone suppliers when I want anything for my car - or just email them with a request. Most suppliers don't list everything they have on their websites and often items which ARE on websites are not actually in stock!
Talking to a person usually gets a better response I find.

I use a grommet combined with a tap washer and it is a nice snug fit.
