SU fuel pump not pumping fuel

I know there have been several posts on this topic so apologies if this question has already been answered. I have an electronic SU fuel pump and after 5 years of rebuilding the car I find no fuel will pump from the tank. I can feel faint puffs of air on the outlet but when I put my finger on the inlet to the pump ( suction) there is no suction. Should I feel a suction force on the inlet ? The pump is thumping away merrily but not much else is happening.

Are you sure the inlet pipe is not blocked? You can always remove the pump and bench test it.

I've had the pick up pie in the tank blocked before. Blew an air line down from the pump end and cleared it that way.

I did of course mean PIPE. Although a good dollop of apple and blackberry would probably do the same....

Maybe it was a piece of pie that caused the blockage in the first place

There is a filter inside the tank which can block and be very difficult to fix in some cases.

Thanks for all the tips, it must have been a gummed up valve because it suddenly started working and is fine now. Appreciate the responses :)

Thinking that having an inaccessible filter in the tank was never a very good idea!
