I have part stripped the engine to inspect. I have no idea of the engine history etc etc

I have had a look at the crank shells and big end shells.I note that there is a little scoring but in my eyes does not look to bad but im nothing like an expert on this. I have taken some pics for you to have a look and see what you think. Pictures are not the greatest but I may be able to take better ones if required.

This engine im trying to sort on a small budget Im wondering if the crank might be good to use and maybe just replace the shells etc.I have never taken a crank out and re build it so I do not feel to comfortable about re building (setting up a new regrind ).

Maybe invest in another camera?

Hard to tell from the pics but not obviously knackered. Have you tried bolting it back together and seeing how much you can rock the rods? Might be an indication.

If you drag a fingernail over the crank journal, does it 'snag' or is it smooth?

Where do you live? There might be an MMOC member local to you that has a micrometer to measure the journals, which would tell you if a regrind is required, or just new shells. Presumably, the engine is still in the car, so only the big-end bearings can be changed?

The engine is out of the car and on my bench. The some shells do have slight scoring you can feel them with your nails but they are only slight.
May be an idea as suggested to contact a local branch. I live in Burnley Lancashire and there is a branch in Accrington
