Engine thrust washer/bearings

My town use only engine has low miles but on inspection I find the thrust bearings either side of the main bearing on the crank have excessive play, is it possible to change in situ with the crank end cap removed and 'push/tap' round the top half of each bearing. Bound to be a bit awkward. Or is it an engine out and strip down job? Any experts out there?

Thanks
Dave

You can replace the thrust bearings without removing the engine as you have described above. Lubricate well.
The fore and aft movement of the crankshaft should be 0.003" - 0.004".
