Hi all,
I'm attempting an engine swap this weekend. Currently the car has it's original 948cc engine and smooth case gearbox. I've got a 1098 engine and geabox to go in!
what's needed? I'm buying a clutch kit because why not but what else might be worth replacing while it's all out?
Is the 1098 a straight swap for the 948 or is there more to it? Can I swap all the ancillaries over?

Changing the engine from 948cc to 1098cc is a straight and easy swop.
All the ancillaries can be changed as well.
The main ancillary difference is the carb and manifold but it will all still swop.

Can the 948 smooth case gearstick be used on the ribbed 1098 box?

The gear levers are different:-

948cc...………………...Pt No: 2A3417 (MOSS).

1098cc...……………….Pt No: 22A492 (MOSS).

For the purposes of the exercise of changing the engine gearbox there should be no problem and obtain a 1098cc gearlever as soon as you can.

You can always change over the remote from the 948 to the 1098cc to get around the gear lever differences as they have the same part No: 22A3411 (MOSS),

Why the redesigned gear lever if the remote is the same? Strange for BMC to do that. Not the first odd thing for them to do of course.
I have excessive swing in my lever (ribbed box) and it has been identified as smoothe case lever.

Later 1098cc gearboxes had remote Pt No: 22G671 (MOSS). The differences incorporated into the later remote against the earlier version do not spring to mind but if I remember correctly the gear lever anti rattle features are different.

The 948 and 1098 gearlevers are different at the base. You can fit the "wrong" one but gearchanging will not be pleasant - as callyspoy has mentioned.

worth mentioning that the 948 and 1098 engines use different backplates.

I should be ok there as I'm swapping both the 948 engine/gearbox for the 1098 engine/gearbox.

I've ordered a clutch kit from ESM (clutch plates out of stock so just ordered the whole lot), a couple of spigot bearings and a 1098 gearstick.
The cars been sat for over over 2 years so hopefully the brakes are serviceable!
More importantly I hope the 'new' engine isn't junk! It was an ebay purchase and I've never checked it over!

What could go wrong?!

If you need to remove the spigot bush - fill the void with bread (organic whole meal is best ) and using a well fitted punch hit the punch/bread into the spigot bush void and the bush should come out.
The bread acts as the hydraulic medium.
If you have an old first motion shaft you can use instead of a punch so much the better.

I picked up crossmember mounts from a very helpful forum member last night but I think we might need to move the crossmember slightly. Engine fired up 1st time and idled beautifully once we sorted the earth so she may drive out the garage today for the first time in 2 years.

The gearbox mount/packing brackets are handed and it is very easy to get then wrong sided which then makes it appear that the gearbox cross member need repositioning.
Having done the same 803cc to 1098cc engine/gearbox conversion on my split screen Ser 2 the 1098cc gearbox cross member utilised the same cross member bolt holes as the 803cc cross member.
See BMC wksp man illustration FFF which shows the correct orientation of the mount/packing bracket items No: 41 & 42.
I am sure that you have done so but for general information - the cross member must be fitted with the embossed word FRONT fitted facing the front of the car.

All done. Drove round the block and all seems fine. Just need a new floor panel!
