Popping when engine braking

Hello all,
The other day, I was in third gear with no throttle going down a steep hill when I heard a popping sound - like someone flicking a sheet of paper. As a novice, could someone explain whether this is 'backfiring'? Is this okay, or does this indicate a problem?
Thanks

Does it even better if the back box is missing!

The Morris Minor does not have a back box unless fitted as an after market addition.

Press submit and if you are not careful the submit gets pressed twice without realising it and you end up with two threads on the same subject which then get picked up by different contributors and so it goes on.
