Armstrong Dampers

Dear All

Before I re-fit my dampers I'd like to get a better understanding of them....I know there are two pistons immersed in oil and each piston has a spring loaded valve ? , also a valve between the two .

Has anyone a good diagram of the workings , or even photos of the stripped units ?

Many thanks

John

Note the two different pistons, one ( bump) with a seal and the other ( rebound ) without , in the next post.

P.S 2 bleed holes removed shown in black from the bottom of the cylinders to the valve

Starting to understand it now...

I think the bump and rebound springs are labelled the wrong way round...

Was that therapeutic for you?
You really are impatient to be spending the morning cutting one open when you only asked the question last night. :)
Nice job though, hopefully they'll prove useful to someone else too.

Yes, I like to get the job done....I am not long in this world.

There are on the crowns of the pistons ball valves held in place by fine coil springs , one assumes the pistons are only functional on the downwards stroke....

More to come as I get my head around them...

Declan Burns provides a very good write up here, viewtopic.php?f=4&t=36349&hilit=Home+damper+repair

Here is my version of replacing the seal, very loosely based on Declans method.

Thank you ,yours I managed to see before hacking mine apart , just to see the "workings" , when they start to leak I will try pressing the shafts out and re-sealing them...

Thanks to all.
