I know old car prices have been rising lately but increasingly I’m seeing good saloons at £6k and more. For years most saloons have been pretty cheap, are these prices realistic? Are cars actually changing hands at these prices or are the sellers being very optimistic? Can anyone with knowledge of recent sales confirm the situation please.

Having a quick look at eBay completed listings (search link) reasonable saloons appear to be trading hands for £2500-£4800. eBay will respresent a slightly lower skew of the market I imagine as higher quality cars will go through specialist websites and intra-club?

I also wonder if there is a tendancy with a marque to see a greater stratificataion as it ages, ie. more fully restored examples and complete restoration jobs, with less inbetween being used as daily runners.

Seems a very fair price . I do think the prices some people are asking nowadays seem too high, but whether they sell at those prices I have no idea - I suppose if money is no object to the purchaser then some of them must do.

Cars for restoration seem to be 1000 to 2000 now - of course they used to be 50 quid, but I had to compete hard to buy my car on Ebay for 1500-odd, now on the road and MOTed (not required, of course, if you are ultra frugal) it has cost about 3000, and when it has had new wings and a quality repaint it will be about 6000 - sounds a lot, but a five year old Astra or similar would cost about the same, probably be less reliable (and certainly less Diy-able), much less fun, and be worth nothing in another five years - so I don't see it as a lot to pay 6000 for a nice saloon, or indeed ten thousand for a Traveller. Most people are paying five or six hundred per month for ever to have a newish car.

Absolutely agree! It's about thinking what you are going to use the car for and being realistic about your skills and budget.
