I’ve just changed the oil and got a washer left over buried in the sludge in the drip tray,I’ve got one on top of the spring, should there be another underneath the spring,
Thanks

There’s a chance it could have lain in the drip tray for months or years and not be part of it atall

There is a rubber washer that goes over the long bolt after the steel washer and under the dish. I've got a screw on filter but from memory I'm pretty sure that's where it goes.

General sequence is:
bolt - steel washer - rubber washer (which Les refers to and is critical to stop oil leaks at the base of the filter canister) - filter canister - steel washer - spring - steel washer - felt washer - pressure plate - filter. Often, due to negligence by previous owners/cack-handed mechanics, various of these parts may be missing and may lead to poor/non-filtration or leaks, .......but they are all easily obtainable.
And don't forget the sealing ring which sits in a groove in the filter head!
