So most people know that because of GDPR, the General Data Protection Regulations that update the old data protection rules, just about everyone is receiving emails from all manner of commercial outlets and clubs societies, asking you to opt back into their database so they can continue to send you stuff. Some of these emails are dome properly, others are very misleading and are simply asking you to continue to receive junk....

What is totally unique is the MMOC approach. I'm expected to send back a paper form at my own cost of a stamp (58p 2nd class)... yet future changes can be made by email ....
This is ridiculous!
If this is 'professional' advice given to the club that it needs a paper form in the post, then clearly the person giving the advice is on another plant!!
Keeping electronic records is simpler than keeping paper records, so why ask for paper forms?
I accept that there will be a small percentage of members that don't use email, but that must be a very low number. So the rest of use should have the option to respond electronically.

I shall be emailing my form back as a pdf!

Oh, and incidentally, the form that came with the magazine this week also tells me that if I want a copy of the club data protection policy it can be found at www.mmoc.org.uk/dataprotection . Try it, it gives a 404 Error!!!!

I agree, snail mailing back a piece of paper is "original".

The Austin A30 club offers a return by post but gives an option to reply on line. So everyone is catered for.

If you look at the form that came with the Magazine this month, the final box on it says:

If you would like to change your mind, see the information we hold about you or update your information in the future, please send an E-Mail to dataprotection@mmoc.org or write to.....

Just thought I'd bring this topic back.

So on 9th May I sent a pdf scan of my data protection permission form to the Club office, using the dataprotection@mmoc.org email address.
I got a response:

Thank you for your email. It will be dealt with by the office staff as soon as possible and you will receive a reply from this address.

I guess they must be really busy as today is 12th June....

I phoned them a while back, with some query about the form, they said they'd take care of it, ---- result!

You know, I get why GDPR is a good thing, but it's a nightmare for small organisations and clubs. A typical case of sensible and well meaning legislation leading to unanticipated consequences. Mind you, they should have been anticipated!

Mixed feelings here. On the plus side, the daily deluge of carp arriving in my inbox and spam inbox has dropped by over 50%. Would be a much higher percentage if a certain company specialising in holidays and other services for over 50's would take heed of my declared desire to opt out of their 'information system'. Lamentably I no longer receive email notifications regarding lonely housewives in my area who are dying to meet me... means I have to iron my own shirts!

On the minus side, my GP surgery thinks I've opted out, when in fact I've opted in, and a well known dog rehoming organisation which I support have opted me out without giving me the chance to opt in
