Thought this may be of interest. British Rail (Eastern Region) publicity photo taken circa 1964 as part of an advertising campaign for the Motorail service. The Moggie convertible is being unloaded from it's two-tier car transporter carriage at Edinburgh Waverley Station. It was loaded onto the train at London St.Pancras Station for it's overnight trip north of the border. It's owner would have probably had a reserved sleeping compartment towards the middle of the train.

My parents took part in a trip, in 1993, to mark 20 years of the MGB GT V8. The trip was centred on Grantown on Spey. The organiser was based in the south but his mother lived in Grantown. He got his car up to Scotland on the train in 1993.

A variation on a similar theme of 'moggy loading'
Silver City Airlines used to go regularly to the channel islands from Bournemouth (Hurn) airport in the 60's also I believe to Ostend and other parts in Europe from some other airports A very quick air ferry system to these destinations.
