Just getting going as a new car and all is well except for a nasty rattle from the transmission which is stopped by resting my hand on the shift lever. Where should I begin?

Have you fitted the right gear lever? Item No: 21 in the link below.

Is the anti-rattle spring and plunger been fitted? Item No's: 36 & 37 in the link below.

Have you got the cup and spring under fitted under the gear lever? Items No's 23 & 24 in the link below.

Is the rubber 'O' ring fitted to the gear lever? Item No: 22 in the link below.

See the attached link for component details.

Thanks for the detail. I will dig in soon. Holding on to the shifter while driving was nearly as annoying as the rattle.

Had the same with a Marina. Rattled happily for a year or more... then I pulled the lever out whilst doing the 'lift and push' into reverse :D

:o :o
I thought the plate that the gearstick pokes through and which bolts in place on top of the gearbox held the gearstick in place...........
Or was the hole it pokes through that worn...... :o
Not something I'd like to experience.
Best wishes,
Mike.

The Marina gearbox lever is secured differently to the Minor.
The Marina gear lever is secured to the remote housing by a press and twist bayonet type fitted cover called a dust cover in the Marina wksp manual..

Ahh, so not as secure as a Minor's gearlever then....

Same as the Morris 1800 landcrab.

Used to borrow my dad’s to go courting when I was a kid.

Had a front bench seat and you could remove the gearstick when parked up.

Happy days ;)

Any of you ever do the trick of putting a halfpenny inside the hubcap of your mate's car? They could spend ages looking for the source of the rattle.
