Lock washer on trunnion

Hi,
The MOT advised that the lock washer on the top trunnion, was not the correct one as the nut had come loose.
I have never worked on this part of the car before, so I would be grateful for any help. I have purchased the correct washer from esm. I have tried to search the message board on this subject, but without finding any details. If there is an item on here then can you politely point me in the right direction.

The washer (Pt No: ACA5278) with the central hole internal flats is fitted first (if the washer is a two piece item or has a small / large dia the large dia goes towards the bush) then the lock washer, then the nut, the nut is fully tightened and the lock washer ears bent over to hold against the flats of the nut.

Surely the Moss diagram shows those parts on the top trunnion pin back to front? The washers referred to should be to the rear of the car NOT the front?

You are correct that the MOSS parts list shows the pin entering the top trunnion from the rear but it makes no actual difference as the pin cannot be fitted the wrong way round as the front of the pin (male taper) fits into a female taper in the damper arm.
The sequence of assembly though is correct.
A common occurrence in parts lists and official BMC/BL parts lists were not perfect either.

You should be able to remove the nut and replace the lock washer without having to jack up the car/suspension.
Do not strip the suspension any further though.

The nut should be done up tight.

Any clearance specified refers to the obsolete threaded top trunnion pin. When the rubber bush conversion was incorporated by BMC any clearance requirements became redundant.

That looks to be right.
I trust that there is a split pin to be fitted through that castellated nut and top trunnion pin.

I think I took that shot when I was trying to change the rack gaiter and couldn't split the balljoint, hence loose bits everywhere. The gaiter got torn and I had fitted the rack so that the blasted inner 'Jubilee' type clip was where I couldn't get at it with a screwdriver. Lots of swearing involved since I had to drop the entire leg off of that side before I could pull the rack out. It might have been easier to undo the trackrod end but it was tight and I couldn't get enough leverage on it due to my back injury.

One of 'those' days.
