Morris Minor Owners Club

I wonder if anyone can help me.... I have inherited my Grandads Morris Minor, and we cannot find any keys for it.. it was lovingly restored by my deceased father a few years ago, my mother has also died a couple of years ago, leaving no trace of any keys or documents.. I have a buyer for the house and I need to move the car and hopefully also sell the vehicle. If anyone knows how I can get keys for it, I would be very grateful for the information. Thank you in advance

Minor type keys are available from Morris specialists but you would need the number which involves some dismantling.

The AA are good at sorting out cars with lost keys, but you would have to convince them that you are properly entitled to it.

I remember reading that lock the codes can be found by either dismantling the boot handle or the ignition barrel. A locksmith might be able to make a blank too, failing that a screwdriver/nail file and a new set of locks may be in order.

Depending on the age of the car, the key number may be stamped on the front of the ignition switch for the whole world to see. My 1956 Minor (with separate pull starter) has the FP*** number visible in that manner.

Picking the locks should take me a max of 20 seconds, on a bad day. They are very in-secure so a locksmith can get you into the car easily and changing the lock barrels will require maybe 10 minutes for the ignition but perhaps an hour for the door handles if it is a 2-door. You can buy the keys on Ebay if you can get the number off of them.

Whereabouts in the country are you? Most older established garages will have a box of old car keys. As someone has already suggested, Morris Minors are not all that secure and it is quite likely that old keys from one Austin/Morris car will fit yours!
!950s Minors have the key number visible on the ignition switch(!) but the later ones do not which is fortunate or unfortunate depending on your point of view!

Given that this forum is available for public viewing perhaps we should not give too much detail on ‘alternative ‘ methods of unlocking a Minor.

If you have got the V5 then it will have the chassis number on it. If you supply that to the British Motor Industry Heritage Trust at Gaydon then they will be able to provide a production trace which should include the key number from which you can order a new key (assuming that the locks were not changed during restoration). There are other ways of obtaining the chassis number but as above, not for open discussion.

Silly question: Is the car open and you simply can;t start it without the key, or are all doors and boot locked?
