Hi folks, sorry to ramble on about paint codes!
Trying to figure out if the recently bought restoration project 1968 2 door saloon was painted Peat brown originally. It looks Rose taupe but could have been resprayed.
Chassis plate code seems to say two door saloon 1098 "D" for delux? Then the numbers 1230447 m
Any help would be good.

I would say that a 1968 car would probably have been Peat Brown originally. I think it had replaced Rose Taupe by the end of 1967. Have a look under the bonnet or boot or inside the car where the original paint is more likely to be present. Rose Taupe and Peat Brown are often mistaken but are quite different. Rose Taupe is a purpley grey and Pete Brown is more brown - like a cup of tea perhaps.
Peat Brown cars are often advertised as "Rose Taupe".

If you really want to do some research, a Heritage trace from Gaydon is probably the best answer.

Don't think paint codes of any kind were included on chassis plates of that age. That looks like Peat Brown to me!

Hi, my restoration project ( it wasn't intended to be ) is also Peat Brown, underneath the poor repaint, and is G reg / 1968 2 dr saloon. https://www.mmoc.org.uk/MessageBoard/vi ... 28&t=67387 . Currently our intention is to return her to her original colour, so I'll be interested to know what you intend to do with respect to piping - i don't think Peat is available anymore.

A suggestion only: could you get away with using Rose Taupe instead. Charles Ware stock it.

If you have the BMC code, surely someone will mix it, CW doe it as a special order in aerosol so it must be available in larger paint tins or for a complete respray.

I think the colour availability question related to piping, not paint. The maroon piping which came with my Traveller woodwork from Woodies looks more brown than maroon to me - if it ever gets to see daylight I suspect a few months of UV will blend it in fine....

I had the same issue with Clarendon Grey. The correct piping was taken off the car when being prepped for painting and thrown away. I was offered black as a replacement which really hacked me off. Eventually a new near match was found. Apparently you have to order 5000 metres of piping to make it viable for a company to manufacture a particular colour. Its often worth looking at other cars of the era as many had piping on the bodywork and in colours which are closer to cars than those limited to the main minor suppliers
